Description:

The Mordecai Lab ( https://www.mordecailab.com/ ) is seeking an undergraduate research assistant 4-6 hours per week during winter quarter with the possibility for extension. No prior lab experience necessary. The research assistant will be responsible for maintaining colonies of mosquitoes and ciliate cultures as part of a project investigating the effects of temperature on the interaction between the western treehole mosquito and its ciliate parasite. This research addresses how ongoing climate warming will affect infectious disease dynamics in nature which has implications for both conservation and public health. Activities will include the following: · feeding larval and adult mosquitoes (with sheep’s blood) · transferring pupating mosquitoes into cages · collecting mosquito eggs · pipetting ciliate cultures into new media All research will take place on Stanford Main Campus in the Bass Biology Building. Training and supervision of the research assistant will be provided primarily by a postdoc overseeing the project.
